Here's a useful method for painting with Brass Balls:
- Undercoat with Beast Hide; this really helps the metal pop
- Base coat with Brass Balls
- 4:4:1:10 mix Brown Ink, Armor Wash, Umbral Umber, Glaze Medium (use liberally)
- Pick out flat areas with Brass Balls
- Highlight with 2:1 Brass Balls/Radiant Platinum mix
- Highlight with 1:1 Brass Balls/Radiant Platinum mix
- Line highlight with Radiant Platinum
This gives you a very good 'naval brass,' which has a high percentage of tin in the alloy. The effect, particularly alongside the wash's tarnish effect, is very striking, particularly over large areas such as entire 'jacks. Because Radiant Platinum has a slight yellow tint to it, it works better for highlighting up than a purely grey metal, such as Quicksilver.
